Biological Control of the Tarnished Plant Bug, Lygus

چکیده
Lygus lineolaris is a pest of many economically important crops. While the species comprising the Peristenus pallipes complex are native parasitoids of L. lineolaris, they do not provide adequate biological control of L. lineolaris. As a result, the European parasitoid, Peristenus digoneutis, was introduced in forage alfalfa. Peristenus digoneutis successfully dispersed from forage alfalfa to strawberries, suggesting that P. digoneutis may disperse into other high value crops. In apples, L. lineolaris feeding causes puncture wounds, scabs or cat facing on the fruit. The success of a classical biological control introduction is dependent on both monetary and ecological costs and benefits. The dispersal and persistence of P. digoneutis into multiple crops is necessary for monetary benefit. Furthermore, if pesticides disrupt classical biological control no monetary gain can be made. In addition, an ecological cost of classical biological control is displacement of native species. The objectives of this study are to-1) establish the presence of the introduced parasitoid, Peristenus digoneutis, in New York apple orchards, 2) evaluate changes in rates of parasitism of L. lineolaris by native and introduced Peristenus spp. since the initial dispersal of P. digoneutis into western New York, 3) determine how four pesticide regimesstandard, reduced risk, organic and abandoned orchardsaffect Peristenus spp. parasitism. During this two year study L. lineolaris were collected from New York apple orchards treated with standard, reduced risk, organic insecticides. This is the first record of P. digoneutis parasitizing L. lineolaris in apple orchards. When compared to rates of parasitism collected from strawberries in 1999 there is an increase in the total L. lineolaris parasitism by Peristenus spp. in western New York. Additionally, there was a reduced rate of parasitism by native parasitoids in the P. pallipes complex, suggesting that P. digoneutis may be competitively displacing natives. Insecticide treatment had a significant effect on rates of Peristenus spp. parasitism. When compared to standard insecticide regimens there was significantly higher parasitism in reduced risk when compared with standard orchards. Conversely, there was significantly less parasitism in organic orchards when compared to standard orchards.

Insecticide Performance Evaluations for Control of Tarnished Plant Bug, Lygus Lineolaris
The tarnished plant bug (TPB), Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), has become known as a midto late-season pest in addition to an early-season pest in recent years with the addition of Bt cotton, completion of the Boll Weevil Eradication Program, and use of lepidopteran-specific insecticides. The expanded prominence of TPB requires continued applied research in the form of insecticide effic...
متن کاملIdentification of Lygus hesperus by DNA Barcoding Reveals Insignificant Levels of Genetic Structure among Distant and Habitat Diverse Populations
BACKGROUND The western tarnished plant bug Lygus hesperus is an economically important pest that belongs to a complex of morphologically similar species that makes identification problematic. The present study provides evidence for the use of DNA barcodes from populations of L. hesperus from the western United States of America for accurate identification. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS This ...
متن کاملExpressed sequenced tags from Lygus lineolaris (Hemiptera: Miridae), the tarnished plant bug.
Expressed sequenced tags (ESTs) were prepared to establish a baseline for molecular genetic studies of the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois). The largest class of identifiable ESTs (15.2%) was from genes involved in cellular metabolic functions, including physiological processes. Twenty-seven ESTs (9.8%) were from genes associated with transcription and translation, in...

A partial genomic library of the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris, enriched for microsatellite sequences was screened to identify marker loci. Eight polymorphic loci suitable for population genetic studies were identified by screening 192 field-collected insects. The observed number of alleles ranged from four to 21 with an average of 12.25 (SE ± 1.94) while the effective number of alleles...

Field trials conducted in 2008 and 2009 investigated whether plot size affects incidence of white flower anther injury by tarnished plant bug (Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois)) in host plant resistance (HPR) evaluations. The three cotton lines evaluated in the trial included a susceptible frego bract line (RBCDHGPIQH-197) and 2 standards, SureGrow (SG) 105 and Deltapine (DP) 393. Samplers...
متن کاملDiet Selection Exhibited by Juvenile and Adult Lifestages of the Omnivores Western Tarnished Plant Bug, Lygus hesperus and Tarnished Plant Bug, Lygus lineolaris
Lygus hesperus Knight and Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois) (Heteroptera: Miridae) are economically important plant bugs on many crops worldwide. However, these omnivores are also facultative predators on a wide variety of insects. This study was conducted to quantify and compare herbivory and carnivory exhibited among different lifestages of these two insect pests. The feeding activity of...
